Margin vs markup
Markup is the percentage added directly onto your cost of goods. Margin is the percentage of the selling price that you keep as gross profit. Confusing the two is the #1 reason small businesses accidentally undercharge and run out of operating cash.
Gross profit
Gross profit represents the exact net dollars remaining after subtracting direct landed costs (raw inventory, direct labor, freight packaging) from net sales. This residual capital must cover all fixed business overheads—such as rent, software subscriptions, insurance, and company tax.
GST (Australian 10%)
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a broad-based tax of 10% on most Australian commercial transactions. It belongs to the ATO, not your business. When reviewing sticker prices, remember that GST is calculated as exactly 1/11th of the total price, not 10% of the total.
